Schüle wants to improve working conditions at universities

The Brandenburg Science Minister Manja Schüle (SPD) wants to improve the working conditions of lecturers and student employees at universities. The cabinet approved an amendment to the Higher Education Act at its external meeting in Neuruppin, the state chancellery announced on Tuesday. According to the amendment, there is to be a minimum period of employment for student employees and concepts for the permanent filling of positions by lecturers. There are also to be new career paths for mid-level academic staff in the form of a junior lectureship, a lectureship and a science manager.

"Without the knowledge and expertise of our universities, we cannot solve the challenges of the present and future," said Schüle. This applies to topics such as climate change, the energy transition, digitalization and healthcare for an ageing population. "At the same time, our universities are an important driver of economic development in Brandenburg with their innovations, specialist training and spin-offs."

Schüle pointed out that the state has therefore significantly increased its financial support for universities in recent years. According to the information provided, the Ministry of Science is supporting the universities with 443.5 million euros this year. This is an increase of 19.6 million euros compared to the previous year and 58.6 million euros more than in 2019. Around 50,000 students are enrolled at the 19 universities in Brandenburg.

Universities play a crucial role in addressing challenges such as climate change and healthcare for an aging population, as mentioned by Schüle. Improved working conditions at universities, including minimum employment periods for student employees and new career paths, are essential to ensure the continuity of this knowledge and expertise.
