Schools present ideas for climate-friendly schoolyards

Ten schools from all over Hesse have presented their visions for a climate-friendly school playground. The ideas range from shady trees and more opportunities for exercise to snack gardens. The schools are part of a pilot project launched by Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) and funded by the Hessian Ministry of the Environment. The aim of the project is to redesign school areas in a climate-friendly and nature-oriented way, according to the press office of the Environment Agency.

At the final conference in Frankfurt on Thursday, the schools gave Hessian State Secretary for the Environment Oliver Conz (Greens) and DUH Federal Managing Director Sascha Müller-Kraenner an insight into the projects. "I am impressed by how creatively and cleverly the pupils have planned their schoolyards as a climate-friendly place for breaks and learning," said Conz. The project enables the children and young people to experience in concrete terms that they themselves can contribute to climate protection.

According to information from the Environment Agency, a total of twenty Hessian schools took part in the project. Half of them already took part in the first funding round in 2020/21. The schools can receive funding for the redesign of their outdoor areas through the state's climate guideline.

The redesign of these schoolyards, fostered by the Hessian Ministry of Environment and Deutsche Umwelthilfe, aims to promote climate-friendly practices within schools. Inspired by this project, students could potentially learn about climate change and its impacts directly through their school environment.
