Education - "School of the Future" initiative grows: another 52 schools
The "School of the Future" initiative launched two years ago to test new forms of learning in Rhineland-Palatinate is expanding. The 45 schools that have been participating since the 2022/23 school year will now be joined by 52 more, as announced by the Ministry of Education in Mainz on Tuesday. This is far more than planned, said Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) according to a statement in Ingelheim. The new schools include grammar schools, Realschulen plus, elementary school, integrated comprehensive schools, special schools and vocational schools.
The initiative deals with topics such as self-directed, individualized learning, interdisciplinary and cross-grade learning, digital education, more flexible lesson times and alternative forms of performance assessment. The whole thing is designed as a so-called "bottom-up" movement, i.e. it is to be driven by the schools themselves and supported by the ministry, the school supervisory authority of the Supervisory and Service Directorate (ADD) and the State Pedagogical Institute.
"There are new demands on learning in our schools today than there were ten, 20 or 100 years ago," said Hubig. This should be taken into account with the program.
