- School has started again after the summer holidays
For hundreds of thousands of students in Lower Saxony and Bremen, the six-week summer holidays have come to an end and school has started again. In the other three northern German states of Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, however, the holidays continue for several more weeks.
At the beginning of the new school year, the number of students in Lower Saxony is expected to rise again. The Ministry of Education predicts 840,000 students. This is around 19,000 more than in the previous school year.
Due to increasing birth rates and migration, the Minister of Education, Julia Willie Hamburg (Greens), expects the numbers to continue to rise in the coming years. Around 82,000 children will be starting school. This is slightly more than last year (80,871). The first day of school is this coming Saturday.
At the start of the new school year in Lower Saxony, many teachers' salaries have been increased, moving them to a higher pay grade. According to the Ministry of Education, around 35,500 teachers will benefit from this. To put that into perspective, over 71,000 teachers work at Lower Saxony's general schools. For full-time employment, this means an additional several hundred euros per month.
In Bremen, just like in Lower Saxony, students have returned to school after their summer break. The city of Bremen is part of the federal state of Bremen, which shares educational responsibilities with the city itself.
Bremen is known for its rich educational history and numerous institutions, including universities and elementary schools, contributing to its diverse educational landscape.
