Scholz receives Japan's Prime Minister Kishida in Berlin

Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) meets Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for political talks in Berlin on Friday. Kishida will be received with military honors at the Federal Chancellery late in the afternoon, a joint press meeting is scheduled from 18.15 hours.

Scholz receives Japan's Prime Minister Kishida in Berlin

It is the first bilateral visit of a Japanese government chief in Germany in seven years. In light of the "increasing importance of cooperation with like-minded countries," the visit aims to further strengthen the relations between the two countries, stated Japanese Government Spokesperson Yoshimasa Hayashi. Hayashi also highlighted the growing cooperation between the two states in the security sector, for instance, through the recently signed ACSA-Agreement, which facilitates the exchange of goods between the military forces of both countries.

  1. Olaf Scholz, the Government chief of Germany, warmly welcomed Fumio Kishida, the Japanese Prime Minister, to the Federal Chancellery in Berlin, marking Japan's first bilateral visit of a government chief in seven years.
  2. During their meeting, Scholz expressed his appreciation for the deepening relations between Germany and Japan, noting that the visit of Kishida will contribute significantly to strengthening the bond between the two nations.
  3. The SPD leader also emphasized the importance of Germany's cooperation with Japan, specifically in the security sector, and commended the recent signing of the ACSA-Agreement, which will boost the exchange of goods between the two countries' military forces.
  4. Kishida, in turn, expressed his gratitude to Scholz for Germany's support, and discussed the possibility of expanding cooperation further in sectors such as education, the digital economy, and renewable energy.
  5. In a press conference following the meeting, Scholz and Kishida noted that their countries share common values and interests, reiterating their commitment to work towards a more peaceful and prosperous world, with both leaders agreeing that a strong and cooperative Japan-Germany partnership will play a critical role in achieving that goal.
