Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor from the SPD, expressed interest in teaming up with Friedrich Merz, leader of the Union parliamentary group, on the topic of immigration. Scholz acknowledged Merz's offer of cooperation in reducing unauthorized immigration during a rally in Jena. Previously, Merz had proposed a shift in immigration policy to Scholz, even without the backing of the coalition partners. Merz and Scholz held discussions at the Chancellery in the morning, focusing on the aftermath of the stabbing incident in Solingen.

The Chancellor emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government and opposition. "We'll certainly make the most of this to come up with better regulations for Germany together," he stated.

However, he also emphasized the need to adhere to fundamental democratic principles and shape the country accordingly. "Our international agreements matter. The rules of the EU apply. What our Constitution dictates applies. And then, practical suggestions are always welcome," he added.

There was an alleged Islamist attack in Solingen where a man used a knife to murder three individuals and injure eight others at a city festival on Friday evening. The primary suspect, Issa Al H., a 26-year-old Syrian, is in custody. The Federal Prosecutor's Office is looking into multiple charges against him, including murder and suspected membership in the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS). IS has claimed responsibility for the attack and also released a video showcasing a masked man who is believed to be the perpetrator. The suspected perpetrator had failed to be deported to Bulgaria last year.

The FDP, being a crucial opposing party, could play a significant role in this collaboration on immigration issues, aligning with Scholz's focus on adhering to democratic principles and building stronger regulations.

During their discussions at the Chancellery, Merz and Scholz might consider engaging the FDP in their deliberations, given their expertise and political stance on immigration policy.
