"I believe that we need to get used to an understanding of democracy in which we see employee co-determination as a central component of our overall successful democracy," said the SPD politician at a works council congress in Bonn on Tuesday.

The motto of the congress, which runs until Wednesday, is "Daring more co-determination". Around 1000 works councils from companies of all sectors and sizes are taking part. They are discussing developments in the areas of work and social organization. Topics include working time recording, workplace health promotion and sexual harassment in the workplace.
