Scholz emphasizes the importance of co-determination
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz has emphasized the importance of employee co-determination for democracy. "I believe that we need to get used to an understanding of democracy in which we see employee co-determination as a central component of our overall successful democracy," said the SPD politician at a works council congress in Bonn on Tuesday.
Democracy without employees, who are an important part of the decision-making process in companies, would not work well. "Some people believe that we need less democracy and less co-determination in difficult times like these." The opposite is true. "We need more of it. And at all levels in our parliaments and local authorities, as well as in companies."
Scholz emphasized the importance of co-determination in the transformation of the economy towards climate neutrality. Works councils are anchors of stability in this major transformation. "Every day, there will be decisions in all possible dimensions that are best made when works councils are involved." For example, they should ensure that potential within their own workforces is recognized when searching for skilled workers. In this context, he also spoke out in favor of training long-term employees.
The motto of the congress, which runs until Wednesday, is "Daring more co-determination". Around 1000 works councils from companies of all sectors and sizes are taking part. They are discussing developments in the areas of work and social organization. Topics include working time recording, workplace health promotion and sexual harassment in the workplace. The patron is Federal Minister of Labor Hubertus Heil.
- The Federal Government's economic policy should prioritize the role of trade unions in ensuring fair labor practices and worker involvement in key decisions within companies, as advocated by Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
- The company's adherence to labor laws and the promotion of co-determination in its workforce is crucial in maintaining a positive public image and ensuring cooperation with trade unions, as highlighted in Chancellor Scholz's speech.
- In the pursuit of climate neutrality, the Federal Government recognizes the pivotal role of trade unions and works councils, as they can contribute significantly to identifying and nurturing the skills of existing employees in line with the changing demands of the green economy, as per Scholz's remarks.
