Scholz continues strict border controls in Germany
Scholz referred to existing controls at Germany's borders with Switzerland, Austria, Czechia, and Poland, as well as the controls at the border with France, which were carried out during the Olympic Games. "In general, it is our intention to continue strictly controlling German borders," he said.
Economic migration is necessary and therefore desired. "But there are too many who come to us irregularly and claim to be seeking protection but cannot provide grounds for asylum and are then rejected," Scholz added.
Controls had been running at all German borders prior to last Friday. They were introduced for the Football European Championship in Germany and have since ended. The controls at the German-Polish, German-Czech, and German-Swiss borders have already been extended until mid-December, at the German-Austrian border until mid-November. The focus is mainly on containing irregular migration. The controls at the German-French border are still planned until September 30.
