Music - Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival opens

The 39th Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival is open. The audience celebrated the evening's soloist, pianist Emmanuel Ax, and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester with stormy applause. On the program were Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 25 and Mahler's Symphony No. 5. The program will be repeated on Sunday evening (20.00 Uhr). Then, Schleswig-Holstein's Minister President Daniel Günther is expected. The opening concert will be broadcast live on 3sat TV and NDR Kultur Radio starting at 20.15 Uhr.

Mahler's Symphony has a special connection to Lübeck. Its fourth movement, the Adagietto, was used as film music in Luchino Visconti's film adaptation of Thomas Mann's novel "Death in Venice". This brought Mahler's music to wider recognition outside of concert halls.

The focus of this year's festival is the Italian musical metropolis Venice. More than 90 of the total 203 concerts and events of the festival deal with Venice, composers, or artists from the city. They offer surprising insights into Venice's rich cultural heritage.

The portrait artist of the festival is the saxophonist Asya Fateyeva, born in Crimea, who has put together a program of 17 concerts and events. According to a festival spokesperson, besides symphonic works and chamber music from various eras, there is also a saxophone workshop.
