This weekend marks the beginning of the 39th Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (SHMF). With two concerts on Saturday and Sunday (6./7. July), the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester opens the festival in the Lübeck Music- and Congress Hall (MuK). The theme of this year is the Music City Venice. The artist portrait is dedicated to the saxophonist Asya Fateyeva. In total, there are 203 concerts scheduled until September 1st, ranging from Classical to Pop to Folk.

According to the festival, Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 25 and Mahler's Symphony No. 5 will be heard at the opening concerts. The Adagietto of Mahler's Symphony No. 5 was famously used as film music for the adaptation of Thomas Mann's novel "Death in Venice" by director Luchino Visconti.

The Venice focus offers festival visitors many insights into the rich cultural heritage of Venice, according to Intendant Christian Kuhnt. Musical ambassadors of the Lagoon City include, among others, the Orchestra del Teatro La Fenice, the Venice Baroque Orchestra, and Ulrich Tukur, a Venice fan.

The portrait artist Asya Fateyeva will be experienced with 17 concerts and events during the festival. According to a festival spokesperson, besides symphonic works and chamber music of various eras, there is also a Saxophone Workshop scheduled.
