E-car purchase premium - Schleswig-Holstein motor vehicle association criticizes

The Schleswig-Holstein Association of the Automotive Industry has sharply criticized the end of the state purchase premium for electric cars this Sunday. "This sudden decision is a bitter setback for electromobility in Germany," explained the association's managing director, Jan-Nikolas Sontag. Thousands of customers who had ordered electric cars in reliance on the subsidy are now facing financial challenges. The end of the environmental bonus is also hitting car dealers in Schleswig-Holstein hard, who had prepared themselves for a continuous transition.

"Such a step must be carefully considered and better communicated so as not to undermine confidence in the policy to promote electromobility," said the association's president, Nina Eskildsen. The abrupt end of the environmental bonus would jeopardize the German government's goal of having 15 million electric vehicles on German roads by 2030.

As of December 17, 2023, no new applications for the environmental bonus can be submitted to the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (Bafa), as announced by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection in Berlin on Saturday. Accordingly, subsidies that have already been approved are not affected by the end of the subsidy and will be paid out.

According to its own information, the Schleswig-Holstein Association of the Motor Vehicle Trade represents 17 motor vehicle guilds with almost 1,200 member companies, including around 250 petrol stations. The companies employ 16,400 people with 3300 trainees.
