Schirdewan calls for an immediate end to the Gaza war

Left Party leader Martin Schirdewan is calling for an immediate end to the Gaza war. The Left's position includes unequivocal condemnation of Hamas' terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, Schirdewan explained on Friday in his speech script for the Left's national party conference in Augsburg. However, he added: "The ensuing war in the Gaza Strip with its terrible consequences, especially for the Palestinian civilian population and thousands of deaths, must end immediately."

The bombing of civilian facilities and the withholding of humanitarian goods are contrary to international law - as is the use of civilians as shields. "That is why I am calling for an immediate ceasefire to end the deaths," emphasized Schirdewan. "The Hamas hostages must be released immediately."

Schirdewan renewed his attacks against the policies of the traffic light coalition and called for the redistribution of wealth from the top to the bottom. At the same time, he reiterated appeals to his own ranks to reposition the party following the split of Sahra Wagenknecht's wing.

"It's okay to be disappointed for a moment, it's okay to be angry for a moment," explained Schirdewan. But: "This chapter is now over." Not all contradictions and points of contention within the party have been resolved. Mistakes had also been made; to err is human.

But there is now an opportunity to further develop and strengthen the left. "Unity, mutual respect and solidarity within the party will lead us back on the road to success," emphasized Schirdewan.

Wagenknecht and nine other members of the Bundestag left the Left Party in October. They want to found a rival party in January. The Left Party is also struggling with poor election results and poll ratings. However, Schirdewan said: "We are back."

Despite the Left Party's criticisms of the traffic light coalition, Schirdewan urgently appeals for a ceasefire in the Gaza war, urging an immediate end to the bombing of civilian facilities and the release of Hamas hostages, having left the party last October to form a rival group.

Following the departure of Sahra Wagenknecht and her associates, Schirdewan encourages party unity and solidarity, while still expressing his disapproval of the war in Gaza and advocating for the protection of Palestinian civilians, left behind in the turmoil of political divisions.
