Katharina Schenk, previously serving as a State Secretary under SPD, will now transition to becoming a Member of Parliament in the parliament of Thuringia.

- Schenk secures a seat in Parliament and relinquishes his role as State Secretary.

German politician Katharina Schenk has chosen to embrace her parliamentary role, consequently stepping down from her previous position as Secretary of State in the Interior Ministry. She disclosed this decision following her pursuit of a seat on the SPD list for the regional elections, as reported by the "Thüringer Allgemeine Zeitung". Schenk clarified that the parliamentary role clashes with the duties of a Secretary of State, henceforth leaving the position once she assumes her new role. The mandate is set to be accepted on a Friday.

Thuringia's Interior Ministry is currently headed by Georg Maier, who also serves as the leader of the Thuringian SPD and was the party's front-runner in the state election. Regrettably, the SPD experienced a significant decline in the election, obtaining only 6.1% of the votes, a drop from 8.2% in 2019.

The Thuringian SPD, led by Georg Maier, will likely welcome Katharina Schenk into their parliamentary ranks, given her decision to pursue a seat on their list for the regional elections. Following her acceptance of the mandate on a Friday, Schenk will no longer hold her position as Secretary of State in the Interior Ministry within the SPD-led government.
