- Schalke to start with Tor-Gala: 5:1 against Braunschweig

FC Schalke 04 kicked off the season in the 2. Football Bundesliga with a win against Eintracht Braunschweig, temporarily claiming the league lead. In a home game, the Royal Blues defeated the Lower Saxony team 5-1 (2:1) in front of 60,534 spectators. This makes Schalke the provisional leaders at least until the Sunday games.

Goals for S04 were scored by Tobias Mohr (9th minute), Moussa Sylla (25th/82nd), and Kenan Karaman (73rd/83rd). Kevin Ehlers scored the only goal for Eintracht after a corner (33rd).

Before Schalke took the lead, Braunschweig had the first big chance in the clash of traditional clubs, but Rayan Philippe failed from a tight angle against Schalke's new number one, Justin Heekeren. The 23-year-old had been preferred by Schalke coach Karel Geraerts over Ron-Thorben Hoffmann just before the season started.

After that, the Royal Blues took control of the game and were rewarded with two goals. Eintracht initially seemed unaffected and managed the 1:3. After half-time, the game remained exciting until Schalke had a thrilling final phase.

The 2. Football League is where FC Schalke 04 began their season, and their victory against Eintracht Braunschweig placed them temporarily at the league's top position. Following his preference over Ron-Thorben Hoffmann, Schalke's coach Karel Geraerts entrusted the goalkeeping role to the new number one, Justin Heekeren.
