Schalke stop friendly Nuremberg with late winning goal

FC Schalke 04, boosted by new coach Karel Geraerts, put the brakes on 1. FC Nürnberg's upward trajectory in the 2nd Bundesliga with a last-minute win. Danny Latza headed home a free-kick in the 89th minute on Saturday to make it 2:1 (1:0) for the visitors, who celebrated their second successive win under the Belgian in their third point game. Dominick Drexler had put Schalke ahead in the 36th minute. Florian Flick equalized against his former club (47'). Nuremberg were the better team in the second half, but were unable to convert their scoring chances.

The 50,000 spectators in the sold-out Max Morlock Stadium celebrated the unique fan friendship between the two traditional clubs, while the professionals fought doggedly for the points on the pitch.
