Soccer - Schalke miss out on third win in a row against Greuther Fürth

FC Schalke missed out on their third win in a row, but once again proved their improving form. After a strong first half, coach Karel Geraerts' team had to settle for a 2:2 (1:0) draw against SpVgg Greuther Fürth. In front of 60,166 spectators in the Veltins Arena, 19-year-old Keke Topp (30') and Kenan Karaman (73') had twice given Royal Blue the lead on Friday. Thanks to equalizers from Branimir Hrgota (50') and Simon Asta (77'), the visitors continued their recent run of seven games without defeat and climbed to third place in the table, at least for one day. After Derry Murkin was shown a yellow card in the 80th minute, Schalke had to finish the game short-handed.

In the first clash between the two former first division teams in eleven years, Schalke got off to the better start. That paid off in the 30th minute. After a remarkable pass from Blendi Idrizi, young professional Topp was on hand to finish off the attack with a powerful shot from 14 meters. However, further chances to increase the lead at half-time went unused. That was punished shortly after the restart. Although Hrgota initially failed to beat Schalke keeper Ralf Fährmann with a lob, he pushed the rebound over the line.

Schalke's second goal through Karaman was even shorter-lived. Just four minutes later, Asta fired the ball into the net with a well-placed shot. Despite being short-handed in the closing stages after Murkin was sent off, Schalke held on for the draw.
