Schalke coach Geraerts angry about Ouwejan's behavior
Schalke's soccer coach Karel Geraerts sharply criticized his professional Thomas Ouwejan for his behaviour when he was substituted after the 5-3 defeat at Fortuna Düsseldorf on Saturday evening. Ouwejan was substituted alongside Dominick Drexler and Lino Tempelmann after just over half an hour with the team trailing 3-0, refused to shake hands with the coach and raged as he walked off the pitch. "I will not accept such behavior. He should have respect for the team, the club and the coach. The team is the most important thing, not the individual," said Schalke's second division coach.
"I didn't agree at all with the performance of the three players and then made a change. I'm not the first and not the last coach to do something like that," Geraerts explained his decision.
In the aftermath of Fortuna Düsseldorf's 5-3 victory over Schalke 04, Ouwejan, one of the substituted players, caused a stir by refusing to shake hands with coach Geraerts and displaying angry behavior. Despite being in Bundesliga 2, Fortuna Düsseldorf's rival, FC Schalke 04, has strict expectations for conduct, as Geraerts stated, "Soccer players should have respect for the team, the club, and the coach, regardless of the league."
