SC Magdeburg wins clear victory at Super Globe - Weber injured

Defending champions SC Magdeburg have started the Super Globe with a win. They beat Saudi Arabian champions Al-Khaleej 29:20 (15:10) in the first preliminary round match on Tuesday. Magdeburg's top scorer was Matthias Musche with ten goals. On Thursday, SCM will face University of Queensland in the final group game.

Magdeburg struggled at the start against the hosts' 6:0 defense and missed several attacks. With more grip in defense, the club from the city on the Elbe pulled three goals ahead (7:4/14). The downer: Philipp Weber injured his knee (23') without any influence from his opponent and was unable to leave the pitch under his own power. Nevertheless, Magdeburg had a clear lead at the break.

Magdeburg quickly extended its lead after the restart (20:12/37), Khaleej was now only dangerous through the former Berlin player Peter Nenadic and simply made too many mistakes. Even when SCM failed to score for several minutes, Khaleej was not able to reduce the deficit significantly. SCM now has the best chance of reaching the semi-finals.

Despite their challenging start due to Al-Khaleej's tight defense, SC Magdeburg managed to secure a spot in the Club World Cup semi-finals, having already dominated the Bundesliga and Handball scene with their triumph in the Bundesliga last season. Despite the injury of Philipp Weber, Magdeburg's star player, the club demonstrated their strength and versatility, clinching a victory in the prestigious Club World Cup.
