DHB Cup - SC Magdeburg reaches quarter-finals: 39:31 against HSG Wetzlar
SC Magdeburg has confidently reached the quarter-finals of the DHB Cup. Magdeburg beat HSG Wetzlar 39:31 (21:15) in front of 5429 spectators in their home game in the round of 16 on Wednesday evening. Omar Ingi Magnusson was Magdeburg's top scorer with ten goals.
Magdeburg only had problems with HSG Wetzlar's 6:0 defense in the opening minutes, but then the Bundesliga leaders shone with their enthusiasm and good ideas and pulled three goals ahead (8:5/10). After 13 minutes, Gisli Kristjansson made his comeback after a serious shoulder injury in June - accompanied by a standing ovation. SCM dominated the game and had a clear lead at the break.
It remained a one-sided game after the break and Wetzlar was far from a sensation. Goalkeeper Anadin Suljakovic (26:17/36) prevented Magdeburg from taking a ten-goal lead, but the Elbe club's dominance was unmistakable. After 45 minutes, national player Philipp Weber also made his first appearance after his knee injury in the Super Globe. Robin Pfeil from the SCM reserves scored the goal to take a ten-goal lead (36:26/55) and the game had long since been decided. The final highlight was the goal by Iceland's Kristjansson to make it 38:28 (58').
