Handball - SC Magdeburg climbs to second place: 40:31 at FC Porto

Defending champions SC Magdeburg have moved up to second place in Group B of the Champions League, benefiting from Veszprém's defeat in Plock. The Bundesliga handball team thus secured its place in the knockout phase. The Magdeburg side won 40:31 (19:16) at FC Porto on Thursday evening and celebrated their 20th competitive game in a row. Tim Hornke and Omar Ingi Magnusson were Magdeburg's best scorers with eight goals each.

Gisli Kristjansson was back in the SCM squad for the first time since his injury in the Champions League Final Four in June, but did not play. Magdeburg started the game attentively, took the lead quickly and after a few minutes used ball gains to pull three goals ahead (7:4/9th). Magdeburg did not really get a grip in defense, but held on to its lead for a long time before Porto was able to reduce the deficit to one goal (13:14/21st minute). However, the SCM was not impressed and pulled away again at the break.

After the break, the club from the city on the Elbe gradually extended its lead and led by five goals after a 3:0 run (23:18/36). Magdeburg's wing players were able to assert themselves time and again. The Champions League winners also exploited the Portuguese side's mistakes when they had a seventh outfield player on the floor instead of a goalkeeper. With an eight-goal lead in the 51st minute, the game was practically decided, but Magdeburg went on to score 40 goals.
