Saxony wants to close gaps in internet coverage
The Free State of Saxony is to be connected to high-speed internet throughout the state by 2030. This goal is to be achieved with the "Gigabit Strategy 2030", which Economics Minister Martin Dulig presented on Wednesday at a gigabit summit with 150 participants from companies, administration and local authorities. The SPD politician explained that more speed and closer cooperation with the companies involved would now be added to the expansion of the infrastructure.
The gigabit strategy provides for the Free State of Bavaria to continuously support the expansion of the networks by the telecommunications companies. In certain regions where an economic expansion is not possible, it should be publicly funded. Gigabit-capable Internet connections are to be provided via both broadband and mobile communications. In addition, application and approval procedures are to be accelerated.
An efficient gigabit infrastructure is the basic prerequisite for a high quality of life for citizens and for the economic success of the state, said Dulig. With the gigabit strategy, there is "a clear roadmap to ensure that the Free State can be connected nationwide by 2030". A gigabit-capable internet connection enables transmission rates of at least 1000 Mbit per second.
The expansion of the Internet in Saxony relies heavily on telecommunications companies, as per the Gigabit Strategy 2030. To achieve this, the state aims to work closely with these companies to enhance speed and cooperation in network expansion.
