Social affairs - Saxony-Anhalt honors volunteer projects: Demography Prize

Several projects were awarded the Saxony-Anhalt Demography Prize on Thursday for their voluntary commitment. First place went to an initiative by the Spora local council (Burgenland district), in which children can contribute their ideas and wishes and have a say through self-elected children's mayors, as announced by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Digital Affairs on Thursday.

Second place went to Magdeburg's Nobertusgymnasium, where pupils can train to become lifeguards, mediators or paramedics and thus come into contact with voluntary work at an early age. In third place was the SchkönART Kreativ WG with a village community center with a bookstore, sports room, after-school care and creative workshop. The audience award was won by the Nauendorf local history association (Saalekreis).

"The wide range of the 141 projects submitted is proof that a lively civil society has grown in Saxony-Anhalt, in which many people work for the community on a voluntary basis and out of conviction," explained Infrastructure Minister Lydia Hüskens (FDP). Politics can and must set the necessary framework conditions in the face of demographic change. "However, we are dependent on local participation and daily work to ensure that our Saxony-Anhalt remains liveable and attractive."

A five-member jury selected the three winners from the 141 applications, the ministry announced. The audience award was chosen via an online vote in which almost 11,000 citizens took part. A total of 10,000 euros in prize money is available for the winners.

This initiative could inspire more Social Awards recognition in the future for similar projects promoting children's involvement.

Meanwhile, in the Burgenland district's neighboring district, Saalekreis, the local history association was chosen as the audience award winner, underscoring the importance of preserving and showcasing regional history within Saxony-Anhalt's diverse communities.
