Art - Saxony-Anhalt bought art for hundreds of thousands of euros

The state of Saxony-Anhalt has purchased works of art for around 101,500 euros this year. These are 17 works by seven artists, the Ministry of Culture announced in Magdeburg on Thursday. They include paintings, drawings and graphics, as well as sculptures and photographs. Five artists' books were also purchased. In addition, there were grants for three purchases amounting to almost 41,000 euros.

"Contemporary art is the mirror of our time and an expression of creativity, emotions and perspectives," explained Minister of State and Culture Rainer Robra (CDU). "Saxony-Anhalt can call a rich art-historical heritage its own, but also has an active and innovative contemporary art scene." The work of talented artists is supported and made visible.

An art advisory board makes recommendations for purchases. These should document the life and work of the artists as broadly as possible and across genres, it said. The purchases for the state art collection are financed exclusively from funds from the gambling levy. Expenditure fluctuates, with 240,750 euros spent on art purchases in 2022 and around 70,600 euros in 2021. Saxony-Anhalt has been purchasing works of art since 1991.
