- Saxony and Bavaria jointly research for better use of AI

Universities from Munich and Dresden aim to advance the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the joint research project GAIn (Next Generation AI Computing). Specifically, the three-year collaboration between Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), Technische Universität München (TUM), and Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden) focuses on the further development of current hardware platforms for AI applications. Both Free States are funding the project with €3 million each.

"With the research project GAIn, we aim to establish Saxony and Bavaria as international leaders in central computing technologies, thereby also contributing to Germany's technological sovereignty," said Saxony's Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow (CDU).

Laying the foundation for what's not yet imaginable

His Bavarian counterpart, Markus Blume (CSU), emphasized: "With the steadily growing demands in medicine, robotics, and communication, our technological progress must also scale up. Energy-efficient hardware and pioneering software concepts are key to this. Although it's hard to imagine what might be possible in the future, we must lay the foundation now."

The rapid progress in the field of AI in recent years has shown worldwide that the application of AI and technologies based on it is significantly dependent on the hardware platforms used, it was stated further. In the long term, AI applications face challenges in the areas of energy consumption, computability, reliability, and the implementation of legal requirements.

Concerns about problems in the further development of AI applications

According to scientists from LMU, TUM, and TU Dresden, these challenges cannot be fully addressed with the current hardware. This could severely limit further developments in areas such as communication, medicine, and robotics, or even bring them to a standstill in the case of energy problems.

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is one of the institutions involved in the joint research project GAIn, working closely with Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) and Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden) to advance AI computing.

The collaboration between these universities, funded by both Bavaria and Saxony with €3 million each, aims to address the challenges in the further development of AI applications, particularly those related to energy consumption and computability, with the goal of ensuring the continued progress in fields like medicine and robotics.
