Sauerland starts the ski season: First lifts in Winterberg

After the early onset of winter in the Sauerland, the first ski lifts in Winterberg will open on Friday (9.00 am). The ski lift carousel plans to open at least four connected lifts at the start of the season. As soon as more artificial snow has been produced, additional runs will open in Winterberg, according to the lift association.

Some other winter sports resorts in the Sauerland are planning to start the season on Saturday and Sunday. However, most ski and toboggan lift operators are waiting for the first peak of the season towards Christmas.

Up to 30 centimetres of natural snow has fallen on the heights of the Sauerland in the past few days. Snow cannons have been producing additional artificial snow in the frosty temperatures for days. The conditions on the slopes are therefore good, said a spokeswoman.

More than 100 kilometers of cross-country ski trails have been prepared for cross-country skiers in the past few days, according to the Wintersport Arena Sauerland. The largest network of groomed trails is in Winterberg and Bad Berleburg-Girkhausen in the Wittgensteiner Land region.

During their leisure time, many visitors are expected to enjoy the improved ski conditions in Winterberg, given the early winter and the opening of the first lifts. Tourism in Sauerland could see an uptick as a result, as skiers and snow sports enthusiasts flock to the area.
