Saudi Arabia issues heat warnings for final days of Hajj pilgrimage
During the Hajj, it's advised to drink plenty and use sun protection like umbrellas, especially during scorching hours if an emergency arises. Saudi Arabian authorities reported over 2,700 cases of heat exhaustion on Sundays.
Numerous rituals, such as circling the Kaaba in the Grand Mosque in Mecca, take place under the open heavens. This year's pilgrimage, which happens during the sweltering Saudi Arabian summer, poses a tough test for the multitude who attend. Many had to take a break along the road due to the heat.
The Jordanian Foreign Ministry shared that 14 pilgrims perished due to heatstroke on Sunday. Seventeen Jordanian worshippers were also reported missing.
Iran reported that five pilgrims had passed away, without explaining the causes. Three pilgrims from Senegal also died, according to the ministry in Dakar.
As the week begins, the pilgrimage is nearing its conclusion. According to official numbers, approximately 1.8 million pilgrims participated in this year's Hajj, including 1.6 million female pilgrims and foreign participants.
The Hajj is one of the Five Fundamentals of Islam. Every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it is obligated to participate in this journey at least once in their lifetime as one of these fundamental beliefs.
