- Sané missed the start of the season - Kane is to be "ready to start"
German National Player Leroy Sané from Bayern Munich will miss the start of the new football season due to his adductor injury and subsequent surgery following the home Euro. Striker Harry Kane, on the other hand, is expected to be ready for the DFB-Pokal match against second-division side SSV Ulm on August 16th, according to sporting director Max Eberl, who reported this while in Seoul.
Kane and the recovering Sané are not part of Bayern's tour in South Korea. "Leroy will continue his rehab for some time," Eberl announced. "After carrying this adductor injury throughout the last season and the Euro, and the subsequent surgery, we want him to be 100% fit. We'll monitor this week by week."
The priority is for the 28-year-old winger to be pain-free in the long run. "It's not about a few days," Eberl argued. Sané could barely train in the second half of last season and played the most important games with pain. At the Euro, he couldn't showcase his performance and didn't score or assist.
The 31-year-old Kane also struggled with back problems and other ailments towards the end of last season in Munich and for England at the Euro. Eberl expects him to return to Munich mid-week.
"I believe the injuries weren't that severe, and the disappointment over the lost Euro final weighed more on Harry. It's done him good to spend some time with his family after an extremely long and tough season," Eberl said.
Eberl: Maximum support for Kane
Kane will be part of Bayern's second test match against his former club Tottenham Hotspur in London on Saturday, "because it's sort of his game." Without Kane, Bayern won 2:1 against Tottenham in Seoul. The coaching team led by head coach Vincent Kompany will try to "gradually prepare him to have him ready for the cup and the Bundesliga."
Eberl is confident that Kane will deliver in his second Bayern year. "Harry is a professional who knows exactly what's at stake. He's been playing at this level for 12, 13 years. We'll give him the maximum support and backing to help him score the same number of goals as last season, if not more." Last season, the striker signed from Tottenham for around 100 million euros scored 44 goals in 45 games for Bayern.
Despite Leroy Sané's absence due to his injury and subsequent surgery, Bayern Munich is still expected to participate in the tour of South Korea, with the focus on his full recovery. The United Kingdom's Harry Kane, also recovering from his injuries, is expected to return to Munich mid-week and will be part of Bayern's second test match against Tottenham Hotspur.
