Protests ensue. - Sandra Hüller urges for an election at a European protest.
Acted star Sandra Hüller (46) amazed all by showing up at a demonstration in Leipzig against right-wing extremism and for democracy on Saturday. "Ordinarily I try to be somewhat hidden when I'm not working, yet today is unique. There are no more reasons."
In the city of Leipzig, nearly 200 organizations teamed up and invited people to "Hand in Hand for Democracy and Human Rights" on Saturday. Hüller, who attained an Oscar nomination this year for her job in the movie "The Anatomy of a Murder," is from Suhl and resides in Leipzig.
In her words, she couldn't recall when the freedom, adaptability, friendliness, and dependability of this society seemed like it was endangered as much as it was now. "I specifically say 'seem,' BECAUSE I'm not allowing you and me to believe that it is."
Officials in Leipzig estimated 15,000 participants, though the police calculated a high four-digit number.
A week before the rally, Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung asked Hüller if she could propose a speech on the stage. "A fantastic, superb celebrity like hers will be a unique, exciting voice," said the SPD politician to the German Press Agency. "A handful of days later, she indicated she would do it."
"I'm an European!," Hüller, who very seldom appeared in public beyond her work, exclaimed before the vast crowds. "Don't fall for the rough tone of the Right, the inaccuracy and violence within the language that creates only one intention: anxiety and division."
"There are no deceptively straightforward resolutions."
"Democracy, participation, co-decision are challenging, creativity is challenging."
She encouraged those present to hit the polls on Sunday Sunday and to bring pals and family members along.
