Sandra Hüller nominated twice for European Film Awards
German actress Sandra Hüller has been nominated twice for Best Actress at the European Film Awards. The 45-year-old has been nominated for her roles in "Anatomy of a Case" and "The Zone of Interest", as announced by the European Film Academy on Tuesday.
Her competitors include Leonie Benesch from the German drama "Das Lehrerzimmer", the Finnish actress Alma Pöysti ("Falling Leaves"), Eka Chavleishvili ("Blackbird Blackbird Blackberry") and Mia McKenna-Bruce ("How to Have Sex").
In "Anatomy of a Case" by French director Justine Triet, Hüller plays an extremely self-determined woman suspected of murder. The drama was released in cinemas last Thursday and was awarded the Palme d'Or for Best Film at the Cannes Film Festival. The team is in the running for an Oscar - including Hüller as the leading actress.
"The Zone of Interest", on the other hand, is about the life of concentration camp commander Rudolf Höß (Christian Friedel) and his family. Hüller plays Höß' wife Hedwig. The drama by British director Jonathan Glazer has already won the Grand Jury Prize in Cannes.
Both films are also nominated for Best European Film. They are joined in the race by three other titles: the tragicomedy "Falling Leaves" by Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki about two lonely people in search of love, "Green Border" by Agnieszka Holland about refugees on the Polish-Belarusian border and the drama "Me Captain" by Italian director Matteo Garrone. The filmmakers of the five titles were also nominated for the award for Best European Director.
Award ceremony on December 9 in Berlin
Thomas Schubert ("Red Sky"), Jussi Vatanen ("Falling Leaves"), Josh O'Connor ("La Chimera"), Mads Mikkelsen ("The Promised Land") and Christian Friedel ("The Zone of Interest") have been nominated for Best Actor.
The European Film Awards are to be presented in Berlin on December 9. It is one of the most prestigious awards in the industry. The approximately 4600 members of the European Film Academy vote on many of the award winners, similar to the Oscars in the USA. In 2022, the satire "Triangle of Sadness" won four awards at the ceremony - including Best European Film.
The winners in categories such as cinematography and editing are to be announced in the coming weeks. The European Film Academy had previously announced that British actress Vanessa Redgrave (86) would be honored with the European Lifetime Achievement Award. Hungarian film director Béla Tarr ("Sátántangó", "The Turin Horse") will receive the Honorary Award of the President and Board of the Academy.
Sandra Hüller's nomination for Best Actress at the European Film Awards for her role in "The Zone of Interest" increases her chances of winning an Oscar in the same category. The European Film Awards ceremony, known as one of the most prestigious awards in the industry, will honor Sandra Hüller and other nominees on December 9 in Berlin.
