Sand washing up on the Baltic coast off Neuhaus

Extensive coastal protection work will begin on the Baltic coast off Neuhaus (district of Vorpommern-Rügen) at the end of November. The so-called Landesküstenschutzdüne (LKSD) will be reinforced over a length of 1.7 kilometers by adding around 330,000 cubic meters of sand, as the Ministry of the Environment announced on Wednesday.

The costs amount to around 3.1 million euros. The federal government is covering 70 percent and the state 30 percent. The work is being carried out by the company Rohde Nielsen A/S from Copenhagen. The necessary sand comes from the state's own Graal-Müritz deposit.

In terms of volume, the most extensive sand replenishment work on the MV Baltic Sea coast is already underway on the Darß off Prerow and Zingst. Since mid-October, the beach and dunes there have been reinforced with 720,000 cubic meters of sand over a length of almost nine kilometers, which corresponds to around 60,000 truckloads, according to the Ministry of the Environment in Schwerin. The project, which will cost ten million euros, is scheduled for completion at the end of March 2024.

The need for civil protection measures becomes evident as climate change impacts the Baltic coast, leading to erosion and the need for coastal protection measures like the ongoing work in Neuhaus. The Environmental Ministry also emphasizes the significance of preserving the coastal environment for future generations, ensuring effective climate adaptation strategies.
