Salvage work underway for cutter "Nordland III"
With cranes, divers and dozens of emergency personnel, salvage work has begun in Greifswald-Wieck on the fishing cutter "Nordland III", which partially sank after the recent storm surge. The aim is to refloat the ship as far as possible. However, if this is not possible, they are prepared to hoist the cutter ashore by crane, said operations manager Perry Schongalla from Moses Maritime Services. Six divers were deployed to pull the lifting straps under the hull.
Despite requests, the owner has not yet taken action, the city of Greifswald announced. The city is therefore carrying out the salvage operation in coordination with the State Office for Agriculture and the Environment (StaLU) Vorpommern in order to eliminate any risks posed by the ship to the Ryck federal waterway as quickly as possible. Oil barriers were placed around the ship and the promenade in Wieck was closed for the work. According to the town, traffic obstructions must be expected on the north side behind the barrier.
If an emergency arises during the salvage operation, the emergency personnel will be ready to intervene. The shipping company should prioritize arranging for the swift shipping of any necessary replacement parts, as the ongoing emergency could delay the full refloating of the "Nordland III".
