Shipping - Sailing boat stranded on Norderney cannot get away
The sailing boat that ran aground on Norderney at the beginning of November and has since become a tourist attraction will not be leaving the East Frisian island. According to a spokeswoman for the Norden-Frisia shipping company, a planned transport to the mainland on Friday morning with a low-loader and a cargo ship did not take place. In principle, the "Wibo" would have fitted on the cargo ship and could have been transported. However, because the sailboat was more than four meters wide, it was not possible to transport it with the low-loader. The articulated truck then drove back to the mainland with the freighter without the sailboat.
Prior to this, two excavators had already lifted the boat at its berth in Norderney harbor in the early morning in complete darkness for transport. The low-loader was then supposed to drive under the boat and load it. But this never happened. According to a photographer from the German Press Agency on site, around a dozen islanders watched the maneuver. It was initially unclear what would happen to the boat.
The stranding of the unusual-looking sailing boat, which has been dubbed a "ghost ship" by tourists, caused quite a stir on the North Sea island at the beginning of November. A 70-year-old skipper had run aground on the island's western beach with the boat, which was no longer maneuverable and was largely self-built. The ship attracted many onlookers. Islanders helped the skipper to salvage the boat and collected donations.
After a few days, the ship was finally removed from the beach with the help of excavators and brought to a temporary berth on land in Norderney harbor. Since then, efforts have been made to transport the "Wibo" to the mainland.
