- Saarland intends to modernize its school assessment processes utilizing artificial intelligence.

Commencing August 1st, learners in Saarland can now incorporate digital devices with internet connectivity, text editing programs, graphic design software, or AI-driven apps in their evaluations. This decision stems from a recent policy update by Minister of Education, Christine Streichert-Clivot (SPD).

This policy allows for the integration of digital aids in tests, including the incorporation of multimedia and materials in every written subject at least once annually. The objective is to tackle shifting student learning patterns and challenges posed by digital technology and AI.

As Streichert-Clivot put it, "Earlier, exam performances were bolstered by the home environment. With AI-assisted programs like ChatGPT in play, we now have two choices: either we bar their use and resort to good old pen and paper, or we thoughtfully accommodate these assistive tools."

AI is no stranger to many students. In subjects such as German, for example, students can leverage AI to draft basic essay outlines and critique the program's process, identifying necessary additions.

Saarland now takes the vanguard in implementing digital assessment evaluations. The state confidently believes in its technical capabilities, having laid the groundwork for such advancements. As a federal state, Saarland also boasts a leading position in providing digital equipment.

On a related note, Streichert-Clivot announced a decrease in the number of extensive performance tests (GLN) in classes 5 to 10 in written subjects, by one examination per year.
