Saar SPD elects Esra Limbacher as new General Secretary
The Saarland SPD has a new Secretary General: Member of the Bundestag Esra Limbacher was elected to the position at a state party conference in Völklingen on Saturday with just under 89 percent of the vote, according to the party spokesperson. Limbacher from the Saarpfalz district received 255 yes votes, 25 no votes and 7 abstentions. The 34-year-old succeeds Christian Petry, who did not run again.
On Friday, SPD state leader Anke Rehlinger was confirmed in office at the party conference. Almost 99 percent of delegates voted for her. Rehlinger has led the SPD Saar since 2018.
In the state parliamentary elections in March 2022, the lawyer won the post of Minister President from the CDU after more than 20 years - and secured an absolute majority for her party. She has led an SPD all-party government in the Saar since April 2022.
The Saar SPD celebrated their success in electing Esra Limbacher as General Secretary, as she garnered nearly 89% of the votes at the state party conference. The SPD in Saarland has been experiencing a series of victories, with Anke Rehlinger being re-elected as state leader with almost unanimous support and Limbacher becoming Minister President, securing an absolute majority for her party.
