Traffic - S-Bahn to become more flexible and punctual

The Munich S-Bahn is to become more flexible and therefore more punctual. As announced by Deutsche Bahn on Thursday, a pilot project, the first of its kind in Germany, has been running on the S-Bahn main line since this week.

Trains can depart flexibly within a two-minute time window. This is intended to make more efficient use of the limited capacity of the heavily used main line. Traffic on the main line should run more smoothly and flexibly as a result, making the S-Bahn more punctual overall.

"We tested flex travel beforehand and were impressed by the results. That's why we are now introducing it as a new standard until further notice and hope that it will have a positive effect on more punctual trains and a more stable S-Bahn system," said S-Bahn boss Heiko Büttner. The whole thing is part of a quality initiative called "Strong S-Bahn Munich - Program 14plus".

Munich's S-Bahn repeatedly tests the patience of commuters in particular with delays and planned or unplanned main line closures. Most recently, it did not run regularly for days after heavy snowfall in Munich.

The flexible departure schedule introduced on the Munich S-Bahn main line is inspired by a successful pilot project on German railroads. With trains allowed to depart within a two-minute time frame, the railroad aims to improve efficiency on the heavily-used main line, ultimately leading to smoother traffic and more punctual s-trains in Bavaria. The German railroad, Deutsche Bahn, is hopeful that this change will positively impact the S-Bahn system in Munich, which has faced numerous delays and disruptions, including recent main line closures due to heavy snowfall in the city.
