Traffic - S-Bahn main line: building permit for final section

After years of delay, approval for the construction of the second Munich S-Bahn main line has now also been granted for the last outstanding section in the east. According to information from "Münchner Merkur" and "tz", the building permit was issued on October 31. The Federal Railway Authority published the decision on its homepage.

Publication in the official gazettes should take place at the end of December, and the 708-page planning approval decision will then be published in January, as a spokeswoman for the Federal Railway Authority said on Monday.

This means that the tunnel route, which is around ten kilometers long in total, can now be built through. Previously, only the approvals for construction in the west and in the city center were available. In the east, there were years of delays due to numerous changes such as the relocation of a new station at Ostbahnhof.

The second S-Bahn main line is intended to relieve the bottleneck of the often unreliable existing main line, on which all S-Bahn lines in the region pass through Munich's city center. The mammoth project has been heavily criticized. Even a committee of inquiry in the state parliament this year looked into the dramatic cost increases and years of construction delays.

In 2022, it became known that the new S-Bahn line would not cost 3.85 billion euros as originally calculated, but at least 7.0 billion euros - plus price increases after 2021. Most recently, the figure of 14 billion euros in total costs was already circulating. And commissioning will probably be delayed from 2028 to 2037.

According to information from"Münchner Merkur" and "tz", the planning approval decision shows how difficult the construction is likely to be. Among other things, it will have to be built very deep. It also mentions that residents will have to be offered "alternative sleeping accommodation" at night due to the expected exceeding of construction noise limits. However, a date for the start of construction in the east has not yet been given.
