Local traffic - S-Bahn Berlin: 112 disruptions per day on average

At the Berlin S-Bahn, there were on average 121 disturbances per day last year. A total of over 44,000 disturbances were recorded for 2023 - a 15% increase compared to the previous year. This information comes from a report by the railway to the Berlin House of Representatives, which was obtained by the German Press Agency and first reported by the "Tagesspiegel" newspaper.

"The operational situation in 2023 has worsened significantly compared to 2022," the report states. It refers to a "nearly unmanageable level". Between mid-2022 and the end of 2023, there were more than 100 daily disturbances in each of the seven quarters - "and in no quarter did punctuality even reach nearly 96.0%".

More train cancellations in Berlin S-Bahn

In general, it is hardly possible to achieve the punctuality target of 96% when there are more than 100 daily disturbances. "Reducing the number of disturbances remains the most important task," writes the railway.

The punctuality of the Berlin S-Bahn for the entire year 2023 was 93.6%. According to the report to the Berlin House of Representatives, there were 21% more delayed trains than in 2022, and the number of cancelled trains increased by more than 52% from 2022 to 2023.

Major disruptions on the Stadtbahn from July 17

The next major disruptions for S-Bahn passengers will affect the Stadtbahn. From July 17 to September 9, extensive construction work will take place there, including full closures in certain sections, as the Berlin Transport Information Center announced:

  • From July 29 to August 7, S-Bahn service between Friedrichstraße and Tiergarten will be completely suspended.
  • From August 7 to September 4, there will be a 20-minute interval between trains on the S-Bahn between Friedrichstraße and Zoologischer Garten.
  • From September 4 to 9, there will be no S-Bahn service between Friedrichstraße and Tiergarten.
