Renewable Energy - RWE secures rights for offshore wind park in Australia

RWE Energy Company has secured the license for a large-scale wind park project off the coast of Australia. According to the company's announcement, it will receive a seven-year right for the development of an Offshore-Installation in the state of Victoria in the southeastern part of the continent. The location is 67 kilometers off the coast with average water depths of 59 meters.

After the development of the project, which includes ground investigations, RWE would still need to apply for a commercial license for construction and operation. This license would last up to 40 years. The leased area, assigned to RWE, has a potential capacity for a power output of up to two Gigawatt. With this, theoretically, up to 1.6 million households in Australia could be supplied with green energy.

RWE has been active in Australia for a longer time

The project is still in an early stage. For its complete implementation, the conclusion of a power purchase agreement is still required. The construction could begin in the early 2030s.

RWE has been active in Australia for a longer time. The Essen-based company is developing several onshore wind park projects there. In addition, the Energy Conglomerate already operates a large solar park in Australia with a capacity of 249 Megawatt. Directly adjacent to it, a battery storage facility is planned to be built.

"Australia is a very attractive growth market for renewable energies," says RWE Manager Sven Utermöhlen. "With the Kent project, we are developing one of the first Offshore wind parks off the Australian coast, in line with our strategy to expand our green portfolio in Australia and the Asian-Pacific region further."

RWE's current Offshore-Installation project in Victoria, Australia, requires the renewal of its commercial license after ground investigations, which could last up to 40 years if approved. The potential capacity of the leased area, designated for RWE, is sufficient to produce eco-electricity for up to 1.6 million households in Australia. RWE, an energy company with a long-standing presence in Australia, is also pursuing onshore wind park projects and operates a large solar park with a capacity of 249 Megawatt.
