Russia evacuates more than 76,000 people from Kursk border region
Additional trains were deployed to the capital, Moscow, for the fleeing, and humanitarian aid was brought to the border region. "The war has come to us," said a woman who wished to remain anonymous, upon her arrival at Moscow's railway station, as reported by news agency AFP.
Meanwhile, the Russian army stated that it has been fighting for the fifth consecutive day against the Ukrainian incursion onto Russian territory.
Initially, the Russian General Staff reported that more than a thousand Ukrainian soldiers, a dozen tanks, and around 20 other armored vehicles had entered the Kursk region. On Saturday, the Russian military announced that it had destroyed five times the amount of Ukrainian military equipment.
In response to the Ukrainian counteroffensive in Kursk and other border regions, Russia announced anti-terrorist operations in Kursk, Belgorod, and Bryansk. These measures include restrictions on road traffic and the use of communication devices.
The fleeing civilians were advised to avoid the border areas near the Kursk region due to the ongoing conflict. Despite the Russian military's claimed success in destroying Ukrainian equipment in Kursk, the Ukrainian forces continued their counteroffensive in the region.
