The citizens of Leinfelden-Echterdingen (Esslingen district) are facing a run-off election in two weeks' time. None of the five candidates for the office of Lord Mayor prevailed in the election on Sunday, as the town announced on its website in the evening. This means that a run-off election between Otto Ruppaner (35.9 percent) and Raiko Grieb (25.01 percent) will be necessary. It will take place on December 17.

Born in 1982, Ruppaner is supported by the Free Voters and is the mayor of Köngen ( Esslingen district). Ministerial Councillor Grieb (45) is an SPD member and is supported by the SPD, but is running as an independent candidate.

He was followed by Birgit Mertens (18.66 percent), David Armbruster (17.55 percent/Greens) and Martin Weiß (2.02 percent), according to city figures.

Incumbent Roland Klenk (CDU) announced his resignation in April. He was first elected mayor of the city of 40,000 inhabitants in 2001.

Around 31,000 citizens were called to vote. According to city figures, the voter turnout was 43.43 percent.
