Draw - Royal draw: Leipzig meets Real Madrid
A royal draw for RB Leipzig: coach Marco Rose's team will face Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League. That was the result of the draw in Nyon on Monday. This is the first time Leipzig will not face an English team in the round of 16 of the top flight. The first legs will take place on February 13/14/20/21, the second legs on March 5/6/12/13. As runners-up in the group, Leipzig will first play at home. The exact dates of RB's matches are still to be determined by UEFA.
Leipzig had already faced Real in the group stage last season - and had good experiences with the then defending champions in their own stadium. After a 2-0 defeat in Madrid, they won 3-2 in Leipzig, with Timo Werner and the now-departed Josko Gvardiol (Manchester City) and Christopher Nkunku (Chelsea FC) scoring. The victory played a key role in Leipzig advancing to the knockout phase of the Champions League.
Leipzig were the last team to be drawn at UEFA's Swiss headquarters on Monday afternoon, with only Real left in the pot. In any case, there were only four potential opponents for the Saxons: in addition to Real, they were FC Barcelona, Real Sociedad, San Sebastian, Atletico Madrid and FC Arsenal.
A round of 16 tie in Spain is a first for Leipzig. So far, they have always had to face an English opponent in the first round of the knockout phase. Leipzig were knocked out by Liverpool FC and Manchester City, while they reached the quarter-finals against Tottenham Hotspur with surprising ease in 2020 and were only knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain in the final round of the final tournament in Lisbon.
