Sport - Rowers start the Olympic countdown
The countdown to the Olympic Games in Paris has begun for the German rowing elite. The traditional performance test on the long distance on Sunday in Dortmund is regarded as a yardstick for the early season form. In icy temperatures, the duo of Jasper Angl and Benedict Eggeling (Münster/Hamburg) won the race over the 6000-meter distance in the second coxless pair, which is important for the composition of the German eight. Wolf Niclas Schröder/Marc Kammann (Berlin/Hamburg) and Mattes Schönherr/Olaf Roggensack (Potsdam/Berlin) followed in second and third place. In the erg test the day before, five rowers from the eight squad recorded personal bests.
In the absence of world champion Oliver Zeidler (Munich), Jonas Gelsen from Frankfurt won the single scull ahead of Marc Weber (Marburg) and Paul Berghoff (Magdeburg). Tabea Schendekehl (Dortmund) came out on top in the women's skiff race, relegating her rivals Juliane Faralisch (Frankfurt) and Maren Völz(Potsdam) to second place.
The DRV has so far secured six of a possible 14 starting places for Paris 2024. Further tickets for the Olympic Games will be awarded at the post-qualification in Lucerne (Switzerland) in May. "We need medal-winning boats - at the moment we don't have any except for the men's single scull. It's our job to find a boat with the best prospects. This may also lead to the weakening of another boat. It can't be about maximizing the chances for the individual," said DRV sports director Mario Woldt. At the World Championships in Belgrade, skiff world champion Zeidler was responsible for the only medal in the 14 Olympic classes.
