Law enforcement temporarily halted traffic on the A27 motorway, spanning from Bremer Kreuz to Achim Nord, for over an hour in both directions, thanks to activists conducting a demonstration by hanging from a bridge to affix posters.

Departure Point 27 situated at Bremen Junction - Route 27 under temporary closure due to protest activity

For an environmental protest, authorities shut down the A27 highway between Bremer Kreuz and Achim Nord for over an hour due to a climate change demonstration. As per police reports, approximately five kilometers at Bremer Kreuz were impacted. Demonstrators descended from a bridge above the A27 at noon, unfurling multiple banners. The police spokesperson confirmed six individuals were involved. The extended closure led to significant traffic congestion. Sadly, an incident involving three vehicles occurred at the rear end heading towards Bremen.

The protest faced legal challenges. Initially, the activists wanted to descend from the bridge during live highway traffic. However, Achim city forbade this, citing safety issues, but approved a demonstration on the bridge. The activists then disputed this ruling in the Stade Administrative Court, which orders a one-hour closure of the motorway for the demonstration. Later, Achim City successfully appealed to the Lower Saxony Higher Administrative Court, reducing the duration of the action to half an hour.

Currently, the activists are rallying against the court case. They cite an ongoing trial following a similar 2021 protest on the A27 during the Transport Ministers' Conference as their motivation. The local Achim Court is expected to deliver a verdict soon. In their statement, they declare, "On the upcoming court date, we aim to prove the necessity and validity of such actions."

They emphasize, "Every day, harmful and deadly car traffic causes substantial harm to numerous people and animals due to its damage to the climate and environment." Less cars would result in reduced noise, improved air quality, and more living space for people. They are advocating for a world that values life over growth, speed, and profit through these actions.

The activists chose to signify their protest near the A27 highway, emphasizing its significant role in environmental degradation. Despite the initial dispute with Achim city over the demonstration location, they eventually agreed on a one-hour closure of the motorway for their cause.
