Rostock's Dressel after victory in Magdeburg: Turnaround achieved

Coach Alois Schwartz ran across the pitch with a broad grin after the final whistle. FC Hansa Rostock climbed to 13th place in the Bundesliga 2 table thanks to the hard-fought 2:1 (0:1) win at 1. FC Magdeburg. A looming coaching discussion is likely to have faded into the background for the time being. Dennis Dressel (46th minute) and an own goal from Magdeburg's Connor Krempicki (86th minute) secured the away win for the visitors.

It looked like Magdeburg would win very early on in the game. Herbert Bockhorn had already given Magdeburg the lead in the fourth minute when his cross from the side was headed into the far corner of the Hansa goal. Magdeburg were extremely dominant at the start, but failed to make the most of their advantage on the pitch. "The first 25 minutes were madness," Hansa goalkeeper Markus Kolke told Sky. "If you're unlucky, you go into half-time 3-0 down."

But luck was on Rostock's side as they did not concede another goal and fought their way back into the game at the end of the first half. Junior Brumado (42) narrowly missed the Magdeburg goal with his attempted shot.

Dressel then equalized for Hansa a few seconds after the break. Magdeburg keeper Dominik Reimann was quite unfortunate. "That gave us a boost of confidence," said Dressel. When Rostock scored the winner in front of 26,660 spectators, the ball bounced against the far post after a corner, from where it hit Krempicki's body and the FCM professional into the goal.

"Today we were really rewarded for all our efforts, especially for the last few weeks," said Dressel. Rostock's last league win came on September 30th against Eintracht Braunschweig (1-0). With 16 points, the Hanseatic side are now three points clear of the relegation zone. "Now I think we've turned the corner," Dressel summed up. Last week, Rostock had drawn 0-0 against Hertha BSC.

  1. Subsequent to Rostock's victory, 1st FC Magdeburg found themselves in Bundesliga 2's 14th position, firmly positioned above the relegation zone due to Rostock's superior points total.
  2. Despite Magdeburg's initial dominance, 1st FC Magdeburg's Bundesliga 2 rivals, Hansa Rostock, managed to secure a crucial victory against them, with 1st FC Magdeburg's Connor Krempicki accidentally scoring an own goal in the 86th minute, helping Hansa Rostock's striker Dennis Dressel to notch up a double, coming off the bench to replace Bruno Labbadia.
