Rostock's robust industry and Schwerin's status as the state's administrative center significantly contribute to the highest per capita incomes in the two independent cities of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. According to the State Statistical Office, average hourly wages in 2022 were 27.69 euros in Schwerin and 27.38 euros in Rostock.
Industrial workers in Rostock achieved the highest wage level, with more than 30 euros per hour. The lowest average gross wages and salaries were recorded for the districts of Ludwigslust-Parchim at 23.93 euros and Vorpommern-Rügen at 24.35 euros per hour.
The State Statistical Office reported Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's gross domestic product for 2022 as 54.8 billion euros, equivalent to 71,947 euros per employed person. However, there was a clear gradient within the state. Rostock once again had the highest economic performance, with 80,358 euros per employed person, followed by the districts of Nordwestmecklenburg with 69,972 euros and Ludwigslust-Parchim with 68,092 euros. At the bottom of the ranking were Schwerin with 67,450 euros and Vorpommern-Greifswald with 64,704 euros per employed person.
In comparison to the other districts in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rostock's workers have the highest income due to their high hourly wages. The combined income from the robust industry and high average wages in Rostock contributes to its residents having one of the highest per capita incomes in the state.
