Construction crane accident - Roof of the art depot restored
Nine months after the serious construction crane accident at the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation (SPSG) art depot, the badly damaged roof has been restored. The 33 meter high construction crane on the building site of the neighboring new sculpture depot fell onto the roof of the art depot in March. No people were injured.
Fortunately, the valuable porcelain and glass objects in the depot cell below the point of impact were not damaged by the crane boom weighing several tons, the SPSG reported on Tuesday. The art objects were relocated in a six-week operation, after which a weather roof was first erected. The structure and roof were then replaced. According to the foundation, the material damage amounted to around one million euros and was covered by an insurance company.
The new construction of the sculpture depot, which has been underway since last year, is intended to supplement the art collection depot that was put into operation in 2018 and will house more than 5,100 objects from the SPSG's sculpture collection in the future.

Despite the ongoing construction in Potsdam's Brandenburg area, the bad weather posed an additional challenge. Several accidents were reported due to slippery roads and poor visibility, hence, the city council urged caution during this period. Meanwhile, the restored art depot, a gem in Potsdam's cultural scene, is now ready to exhibit its collection again.
