Heavy Rain Causes Severe Flooding - Roads covered in mud, basement filled with water: intense weather conditions.

Weekend storms and floods posed challenges for firefighters and other aid workers in certain areas of Thuringia. As confirmed by the state operations center of the police until early evening on Sunday, there were no reports of severe injuries or deaths related to the floods and thunderstorms.

Saturday's emergency requirements were particularly pressing in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district. In the village of Zillbach, Schwallungen's Bergstraße was submerged by the rising waters of the Zillbach river, resulting in flooded cellars requiring pumping. Local residents were warned to switch off their power supply temporarily. The districts of Floh, Breitungen, and Brotterode-Trusetal also experienced flooded streets leading to mudslides. A lightning strike in Schmalkalden's Wernshausen district damaged a utility building and the town hall.

Gera had its own challenges as the Wipse river overflowed in the Liebschwitz region. The fire department quickly pumped water from several flooded cellars and fortified a damaged dike with sandbags. Hilbersdorf in the Greiz district was significantly affected by the floodwaters.

It was announced on Sunday by the state office for the environment, mining, and nature conservation that there was no longer any regional or cross-regional flood danger in Thuringia. However, local floods and rapidly rising water levels could still occur due to heavy rainfall. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the final showers should cease by Monday night, and the beginning of the week will be predominantly dry with many clouds lingering in the sky.
