During Pentecost, the state of Saarland faced unprecedented floods causing extensive damage to the public infrastructure. Environment and Transport Minister Petra Berg (SPD) revealed that roads were occasionally submerged, and there were cases of landslides and overflow. The Saarland Road Construction Agency (LfS) estimates the repair costs for state roads to reach approximately €11.5 million. The expenses for federal roads are estimated to be around €2.9 million.
The worrisome aspect is that the extent of damage to bridges, retention basins, support walls, and pumping stations as well as bike paths is still being determined.
Moreover, the forests and their trails in Saarland were severely impacted, resulting in an estimated need of €740,000 for the necessary repairs to the forest roads and infrastructure.
The total cost of repairing all the damages in the entire Saarland state remains uncertain.
In a recent government statement to the state parliament, State Minister President Anke Rehlinger (SPD) mentioned that a supplementary budget is under active consideration.
