Data analysis - Road accidents in Hesse result in fewer fatalities.

In 2023, the number of fatalities from traffic accidents in Hessen dropped to an all-time low since 2006, not counting the pandemic year 2021. A total of 189 people lost their lives in such incidents, 19 fewer than the previous year, stated the Interior Ministry in Wiesbaden on a Monday.

When it comes to police records on road accidents, they've been electronically logged since 2006, with an alarming 378 fatalities recorded that year. Things took a turn in 2021, though - only 185 people died in such incidents due to restricted movement enforced by the pandemic, causing much less traffic on the roads than usual.

In 2023, the Hessian police noted a spike in overall accidents,Numbering around 145,770 compared to the preceeding year, a 6% rise. Interestingly, the accident rate was approximately 2.5% less than in 2019, pre-pandemic. The Hessian auto registry recorded 63,786 more vehicles on the first day of 2023 compared to 2022, as reported by the ministry, using data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority. During 2023, a whopping 25,497 individuals either sustained injuries or lost their lives in road accidents, while in 2022, it was 25,027.

Shortcomings in the safety distance remained the most frequent reason for the majority of the accidents in the previous year, with a 22% share. Violations of right-of-way rules and speeding followed as the second and third most common culprits. In over 1,200 instances where people got hurt, alcohol was found to be a contributing factor.

The Ministry added that they'd had a spike in THC-related checks since legalizing cannabis. Due to this, they projected a surge in trips influenced by the compound, which ultimately worsens traffic accident statistics.
