Weather - Risk of flooding on some rivers after rain and thaw
After persistent rainfall and thawing weather, there is a risk of minor to moderate flooding in some river basins in Lower Saxony. "At many river gauges, the water level has reached full discharge," the Lower Saxony Water Management, Coastal Defence and Nature Conservation Agency (NLWKN) announced on Tuesday in response to a query.
In some places on the Aller and the Leine, reporting level two of four has already been exceeded. This means that agricultural and forestry areas in particular could be flooded. According to the NLWKN, the floods are concentrated in the Aller, Leine and Oker river basins.
Warnings from the NLWKN flood forecasting center also apply to the Lune, Oste and Schwinge river basins in the northeast of Lower Saxony as well as the Hunte near Oldenburg.
The state agency's flood experts have been registering rising water levels since Sunday. According to them, persistent rainfall and snowmelt in the Harz Mountains in particular had led to higher water levels in many bodies of water. As a lot of rain had already fallen in some regions in the fall, water levels were already high in some places. In many places, the soil was already very saturated with water and could no longer absorb much, it was said.
According to the experts, the risk of flooding will remain for a few more days. "The water levels on the Aller and Leine rivers are also expected to remain high until the end of the week," the authorities added. The water level on the lower reaches of the Hunte could also remain high for the time being. "However, as it is expected to remain dry from Thursday, we assume that the situation will increasingly calm down and that there will be no aggravating flood situation for the time being," the state agency continued.
